“We were always busy”

Rivka Olley ice skating on the frozen tennis courts behind officers’ row in the late 1950s.

We rode our bikes, played tennis, climbed the rocks. I went fishing a lot. Walked around, went in the mortar pit area, you know, got into things you weren’t supposed to do. We were always busy.”

-Rivka Olley, lived at Fort Slocum 1956 to 1962

Some of the fondest memories were during the winter; my father would tell his people that worked for him to go fill the tennis courts with water and we would ice skate on there.”
